Chesterfield Gorge
Activity of the Month
[27‑Feb‑2026] This month, we bring you to the Chesterfield Gorge in West Chesterfield, MA. The gorge, nicknamed the Grand Canyon of Massachusetts, features a 70-foot-deep rock canyon formed by the east branch of the Westfield River. Visitors can walk along the edge of the canyon then continue on a dirt road that follows the river for miles.

Anne Van Curen Talks Grandma Gatewood
[26‑Feb‑2026] We celebrated the adventurous spirit of Emma "Grandma" Gatewood, the first woman to solo hike the Appalachian Trail, with Anne Van Curen in a recent Winter Book Club discussion. Anne's monologue beautifully conveyed her journey, which started with a few basic supplies in a homemade sack and Keds on her feet.

Cross-Country Skiing at Notchview

Skating and Pizza at Amelia Park
[23‑Feb‑2026] A great time was had by all at the vacation week skating and pizza party at Amelia Park organized by the Chapter's Family Programs Committee! Twenty-one kids and their parents joined in the fun for this free event. Thank you, Family Programs volunteer Heather Wyman, for organizing this great event, and to Billy Fellows, Amelia Park Manager, for hosting it! Meet Me at the Trailhead: Stories of Love and Friendship in the Outdoors

Critical Maintenance Training Scheduled
April 11, 2026
[18‑Feb‑2026] The New England Trail Committee will be hosting a Critical Maintenance Training for AMC Trail Adopters at Noble View Outdoor Center on April 11. This training will be led by Craig Heinselman, our AMC Adopt-a-Trails Coordinator and Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor for the North Country. Sign up here. Knightville Dam Hike
[17‑Feb‑2026] We had a great group for today's hike at Knightville Dam in Huntington, complete with long-time Tuesday hikers, five hike leaders, four Executive Committee members, and one first-timer with the AMC Western MA Chapter.

All Out Adventures This Spring
[16‑Feb‑2026] This spring, we are continuing our partnership series with All Out Adventures to provide adaptive recreation experiences along the New England Trail. We are looking for volunteers who want to enjoy a day out on the trail, learn how to support participants with disabilities, and get experience working with adaptive recreation equipment.

Western MA Tabling Event at Banff Film Festival
[15‑Feb‑2026] The AMC Western MA Chapter was well represented last night at the Banff Center Mountain Film Festival World Tour at Lenox High School. Membership Chair, Kathy Kindness, with help from volunteers and Executive Committee members, saw a steady stream of visitors to the table, curious about what we have to offer.

Yesterday, the EPA finalized its decision to revoke the endangerment finding – the science-based and common-sense determination that greenhouse gases harm human health and the environment. Without it, the agency loses its authority to regulate emissions, leaving our skies vulnerable to increased air pollution. VIEW ARTICLE »

2026 A.T. Gathering Held in Dalton
[10‑Feb‑2026] The 25th Annual Gathering of MA A.T. volunteers was held at the St. Agnes School in Dalton last Saturday. Sixty-seven volunteers attended (winter weather kept others from making the trip). Volunteers shared social time and attended breakout sessions in our A.T. Committee's program areas: Trail Maintenance, Overnight Site Maintenance, Corridor Monitoring, Natural Resource Monitoring, and Cultural Resources Monitoring.
MassBike Day of Action to Make Streets Safer for Cyclists
[08‑Feb‑2026] On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, MassBike gathered with partners, advocates, and legislative staff at the MA State House. Everyone was there to learn, advocate, or inspire action for S.2344 & H.3754, An Act relative to traffic regulation using road safety cameras. The room reached standing room only a few minutes into the briefing; chairs and aisles were full of advocates and a large number of State House staffers, ready to learn and return to their offices with more information about why their representatives should support the bill.

Learning Day Snowshoe Outing

Last weekend Mike April, the Chapter's Hiking Chair, led a fantastic snowshoe outing that doubled as a hands-on learning day for new AMC trip leaders in North Amherst.

Winter Hiking
