Hiking the Hoosac Range Trail
[31‑May‑2026] AMC Western MA hike leader Alison, led a hike on the Hoosac Range Trail in North Adams yesterday. The hike ends on Spruce Hill with beautiful views of Mt Greylock. On the way back you pass the Yoda Tree, a burl that looks like Yoda. Have you ever seen the Yoda Tree?

A Beacon Standing for Peace
[25‑May‑2026] If you have ever been to Mt Greylock, or even driven by it in the valley below, you have seen the majestic monument on its 3491 foot peak, the highest in MA. It's Lady's Slipper Season in Western MA!
[22‑May‑2026] If you've been out in the woods recently, you may have come across a Lady's slipper. This beautiful member of the orchid family - Cypripedium - is a striking, long-lived native wildflower celebrated for its unique pouch-shaped blossom. In MA, these highly specialized wild orchids are currently in peak bloom across New England woodlands, generally flowering from mid-May through June. VIEW ARTICLE »

AMC 150 Relay: Guilder Pond to Kellog Rd
[21‑May‑2026] The second AMC 150 Relay hike in MA was led by Trish Johnson on Monday - a 9.8-mile hike from Guilder Pond to Kellog Rd in Sheffield. Thanks everyone for carrying the baton 10 miles closer to the finish in Maine in hot and humid conditions!

Biking the Farmlands
[20‑May‑2026] Yesterday's warm temperatures didn't stop the Bicycling Committee from riding through the beautiful farmlands of Sunderland and Hadley. No hills but the steady pace kept the group working hard throughout the 18-mile ride.

The AMC 150 Anniversary Relay is Finally in MA!
[19‑May‑2026] Chapter Chair Kathy Martin led the first AMC 150 hike in MA on Sunday. It was a great hike on the Appalachian Trail from the Northwest Cabin in CT to Guilder Pond, in warmer than normal heat.

[14‑May‑2026] Since this is National Bike Month, we want to make sure everyone is aware of one of the most scenic bike paths in MA - the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. Protect Water and Nature Ballot Initiative
How You Can Help
[01‑May‑2026] A top priority for AMC in MA this year is the passage of the Nature for MA ballot question. The question — if passed by voters on the November 2026 ballot — would dedicate funds from the existing state sales tax on sporting goods to raise an estimated $100 million every year for protecting and conserving water and nature in MA. [28‑Apr‑2026] What a perfect day for a wildflower hike at Stanley Park! The spring ephemerals are still here and other wildflowers are beginning to appear.

Double Header Weekend in Tyringham
[27‑Apr‑2026] Volunteers with the Chapter's A.T. Committee were busy in Tyringham this past weekend. On Saturday we worked with local volunteers at Tyringham Cobble to clear brush from the "sound of music" overlook at the top of the Cobble, opening up a view of the village and the hills beyond. Now this open area can be maintained by mowing about once a month.

The AMC 150 Relay is Heading to Western MA
[24‑Apr‑2026] The AMC 150 Relay event celebrating the 150th anniversary of AMC started on March 14th in VA and is currently in PA. It will reach western MA on May 17th, winding its way across the state on the Appalachian Trail, the New England Trail, roads and waterways as it heads toward NH.

Critical Maintenance Training

[18‑Apr‑2026] AMC staff are offering a free critical maintenance training and workday on the New England Trail for new and seasoned volunteers alike. We encourage new volunteers, anyone interested in learning more about trail management, and those will several years of trail work experience to attend. It is recommended that volunteers receive this training every 3-5 years, both as a refresher and as an opportunity to offer guidance to new volunteers.

The Thing About Bees: a Love Letter
[04‑Apr‑2026] The AMC Western MA Chapter, in collaboration with the Hilltown Family Center in Russell, has installed a new Storywalk® at the All Persons Trail at the Noble View Outdoor Center. The book, "The Thing About Bees: a Love Letter" is written and illustrated by Shabazz Larkin as a love letter from a father to his sons.

We're beginning to see some daffodils in the gardens and spring ephemerals peaking up through the leaves, and more folks are getting out into the woods, and on the roads and waterways.

Starting at the north trailhead in Easthampton, they hiked a beautiful 5-mile loop on the New England National Scenic Trail to two viewpoints, Goat Peak and Dry Knoll. Mother Nature showered them with lovely snowflakes for the last 45 minutes of the hike. Elbert celebrated his 83rd birthday yesterday so everyone sang happy birthday to him. Hiking is ageless!
