On February 3, MassBike spent the day in the MA State House in support of "An Act Relative to Traffic Regulation Using Road Safety Cameras". A standing-room-only briefing featured bill sponsors Senator William Brownsberger and Representative Steve Owens, advocates from Families for Safe Streets, Somerville Mayor Jake Wilson, Worcester Police Chief Saucier and Sgt Foley, and reprsentatives from AAA Northeast and Verra Mobility, a company that works with automated camera technology.
This legislation would allow cities and towns to install traffic safety cameras to capture violations of red light running, speeding, and blocking the box — if they come with strong safeguards for data protection and equity. You can learn more about this Day of Action, view the briefing, and get to know more about this important legislation on the MassBike blog.
