1,700 Acres Returned to the Penobscot Nation

[16‑Nov‑2025] As part of AMC's acquisition of the Barnard Forest, we've returned 1,700 acres of Maine wetlands and forest to the Penobscot Nation. Before transferring the property back to the land's original steward, AMC re-opened roads that had been closed to the Tribe for the last 20 years.

Tuesday Hikers in North Amherst
[11‑Nov‑2025] The Tuesday Hikers enjoyed a beautiful hike in North Amherst and Shutesbury led by AMC Hiking Chair, Mike April. Under mostly grey skies with alternating snow flurries and bursts of sunshine, the group walked along the Atkins Reservoir, Dean's Brook, the Mill River, and Puffers Pond, then warmed up with hot cocoa and snacks afterwards.
Protect Water and Nature Ballot Initiative
[10‑Nov‑2025] Help the Nature for Massachusetts Coalition put the Protect Water and Nature Ballot Initiative as a question on the November 2026 ballot. Everyone in MA â no matter where we live â deserves clean drinking water and access to nature. Next year, MA has an important opportunity to protect our rivers, lakes, forests, farms, and other natural areas. NATURE FOR MA »

ATC Shout Out!
[07‑Nov‑2025] AMC Western MA got a shout out from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) for volunteer work in September. The Chapter led 10 volunteers on a four-day "Volunteer Vacation" where volunteers maintained 100 monuments and cleared and painted over six miles of boundary lines.

A.T. Committee at Work
[02‑Nov‑2025] On November 1, a group of the Chapter's volunteers set out to do trail boundary markings on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Our A.T.

Wear Orange!
[17‑Oct‑2025] Hunting season started on Mount Greylock on Tuesday, October 14 2025. Mount Greylock State Reservation recommends that hikers and pets wear blaze orange in a conspicuous manner during the hunting season.

Happy Indigenous People's Day!
[13‑Oct‑2025] This is a great day to remind ourselves of the original stewards of this land we call Massachusetts, which is named after the Massachusett tribe that lived here centuries ago near the Blue Hill region south of Boston. Massachusett translates to "at or about the great hill".

Tuesday Hikers Celebrate 26 Years!
[10‑Oct‑2025] The AMC Western MA Chapter celebrated 26 years of Tuesday hikes with a six-mile hike at Chesterfield Gorge, a pot luck luncheon, and a champagne toast on a perfect fall day! Seven Sister's Hike
[06‑Oct‑2025] A fun time was had by all on the Seven Sister's hike (aka the NET Section 7) led by AMC hike leader Kim Carlino on a beautiful day last month. The nickname comes from the 7 major peaks along the trail, but sometimes it seems like a lot more than seven! To join future hikes with us, check out our upcoming chapter activities.

Berry Song
[05‑Oct‑2025] There's a new StoryWalk® book installed on the All Person's Trail at Noble View Outdoor Center! The book, Berry Song, a Caldecott Honor Book, is a children's picture book written and illustrated by Michaela Goade. It follows a young Tlingit girl and her grandmother as they forage for berries and other gifts from the land and sea in Alaska. The story celebrates Indigenous culture, land stewardship, and intergenerational wisdom.
